How to Add More Flexibility to Your Pistol

Pavel taught us these three things that really helped me:

1.   Hamstring flexibility – Active and Passive Straight Leg Raises

2.  Hip Flexors CANNOT be tight – RKC HF stretch or partner HF Stretch.  A similar effect if you don’t have a partner is hanging a KB off your toe and lifting it off the ground (unilateral only), or even better – doing inverted squats using gravity boots (bilateral or unilateral).  Those let you put almost all your BW into lengthening your HFs.

3.  Use heavy double KB front squats to give you the strength to come up out of the pistol.

Since Pavel introduced Russian joint mobility training to Americans in his first book back in 1997, it has become an essential part of many athletes’ training. An entire new industry of Joint Mobility instruction has sprung up.

Where do I fly into? 3 options: LAX, Burbank, or Santa Barbara. If you fly into LAX you can drive directly over to Santa Monica (about 10-15 minutes) and drive up the Pacific Coast Highway to Ventura, a scenic one hour drive up Malibu and along the ocean.  It beats taking the 405, the busiest freeway in the world.
